My Approach

At Black Forest, we are a design-only landscape architecture firm—and that is our biggest advantage. Our sole focus is creating a customized landscape design tailored to your needs, your style, and your budget. We don’t sell installation services or materials, so our only goal is to provide unbiased, professional design solutions that empower you to take control of your project.

We provide scaled, detailed landscape plans that you can either use to guide your own DIY installation or present to contractors for accurate bidding. This puts you in charge of both the vision and the budget. Along with your plan, we provide:

  • A step-by-step project roadmap, including what should be addressed first.
  • A detailed estimated budgetcovering both materials and labor.
  • Coaching and guidance on selecting contractors, ordering materials, and avoiding common pitfalls.
  • A plant introduction packagefeaturing pictures and descriptions of each plant, with specific insights into how they will perform in the Denver Metro Area.

Installation Oversight

A landscape is only as good as its installation. That’s why Black Forest collaborates with select, trusted installation companies and can personally oversee the process. This ensures the design is installed correctly and sustainably—avoiding costly issues like:

  • Improper sprinkler placement
  • Poorly installed edging
  • Untucked weed fabric
  • Soil prep and drainage mistakes

Many of these issues are not visible until years later, but can result in major expenses or plant failure. With Black Forest’s oversight, you can move forward confidently, knowing your investment will thrive.

Licensed Landscape Architect

Dan's journey in landscaping began in the mid-1980s, working on everything from mowing lawns to installing complex water features and irrigation systems.

From Roots to Design Studio

After graduating from Colorado State University in 1995, Dan refined his skills at 'Design and Build' companies. In 2002, he founded Black Forest Landscape Design Studio, focusing on designs for DIY enthusiasts.

Black Forest Landscape Design Studio started in 2002 to serve a specific need: high-quality designs for DIY homeowners and smaller projects.
